Hello Drama and Stagecraft Families!
Apologies for the delayed update as things get a little crazy leading up to showtime in the theater world. Here is what your students have been working on the last few weeks and what we have coming up!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns about what is coming up, please feel free to reach out at any time!
I hope to see some of you at conferences this week!

DRAMA CLUB
This past weekend, the Drama Club had our first performance of the year with our Fall Play, Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward. We had a very successful weekend and it was a great way to start our season!
Coming up next week, we have our second Drama Club meeting of the year on Monday, 11/21 from 3:15-4:30 to discuss upcoming musical auditions and crews. After Thanksgiving break, we will jump right in to auditions for this year's Winter Musical, The Wedding Singer (yes, like the Adam Sandler movie!). All audition dates and times can be found on the poster provided. Students *MUST* complete all 3 auditions (singing, dancing, acting), and should contact [email protected] if they cannot attend one of the audition dates. Anyone interested in auditions should sign up using the QR code found on the poster here. |
DRAMA I
Drama I students finished up their Spooky Radio Broadcast performances during our Voice Unit at the end of October. The kids did a great job of using the techniques we learned to experiment with different character voices and practice essential projection and articulation for the stage.
The last few weeks, students have started learning about the principles of movement in theater and how to make and show characters using just their bodies and physical choices while working on their Formative 📓 MP1: Movement & Pantomime Notes Portfolio that is due at the end of the unit and will receive a letter grade in IC.
For their final performance, students will be performing a pantomimed scene with a partner. Students were asked to choose a famous character from a cartoon, other media, history, etc that they will try to emulate during their pantomime. Their partner was asked to choose a character from a completely different "universe" (for example, both could not have Disney characters, but one could be Cinderella and the other partner could be Dracula), and then I assigned them a random location. Since choosing characters and assigning locations, they have been writing pantomimed scenes showing how their character would react to their partner's character, and how they would react to the location they were assigned.
This week, we will finish rehearsing these scenes, focusing on clarity of story, exaggerated character and pantomimed movements, character choices based on character analysis, critique practice and collaboration with their scene partner.
We hope to perform these scenes next week before Thanksgiving break so we can return and start our scene study unit, which will finally combine all of the vocal and movement technique items we have learned about so far this year. Photos of performances to come!

STAGECRAFT
Stagecraft students finished the set build for our Fall Play Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward last week. As mentioned in the Drama Club Update, the show was extremely successful and audience members were very impressed with the set and all the technical elements students created over the past 6 weeks. Since the build is finished, this means that their Summative 📓 BSSB1: Blithe Spirit Set Build Portfolio is due today, 11/14 by midnight. Students have been working on these portfolios every week for the last 6 weeks, and had two whole work days in class at the end of last week to complete them. If students fail to meet the deadline for the portfolios, they will not be able to receive full credit. The photo attached is the example students were given with instructions of how to receive a proficient grade for each week. |
Now that we have finished the build, we are also starting our❗BSSB2: Summative Conference that is due at the end of the week. Students will complete a conferencing script, assessing their performance over the last 6 weeks, and then we will meet 1:1 to discuss their progress, strengths, areas for growth, and goals for our musical set build. While we conference, students will begin learning about the elements of design and researching for our Winter Musical, The Wedding Singer (yes, like the movie!).
The Summative 📓 DMR2: Elements Design and Musical Research Portfolio containing this research and their design choices will be due Friday, 12/2 by midnight. We will be working on it daily in class until then, so no late work will be accepted.
We will begin the set build for The Wedding Singer on December 5th!

DRAMA II/III/IV
Drama II/III/IV students are officially in rehearsals for the Drama III written Spooky Scenes!
Drama II students have completed their character analysis documents and received blocking and movement direction from their Drama III directors, and they have now began the memorization and off-book rehearsal process. Next week, we will have our Summative Off-Book Line Check, and after break, we will continue polishing the scenes and hopefully perform with costumes and some tech right before Winter break!
Photos and updates to come!
